Stand Up! Speak Out!
On Bias & Bullying
A Music-Based Anti-Bullying Program

"Many anti-bullying programs emphasize respect for others... but don’t sufficiently educate students about the biases that shape our thoughts, speech and actions. Stand Up! Speak Out! was developed to fill that programming need for schools and community groups."

"The US Department of Health and Human Services reports that students most at risk for bullying are those who are 'actually or perceived to be different.' That's bias.  We can only eliminate it by shining a light on it, and helping students and staff become more aware of the bias behind the bullying."

STAND UP! SPEAK OUT! on Bias & Bullying is a music-based program designed to support anti-bullying education and foster a more positive learning environment by promoting Ally Building, Bias Awareness, and Bystander Empowerment. A highly regarded anti-bullying educator, presenter Susan Goodman is also an accomplished saxophonist-singer-songwriter. Her eclectic blend of jazz, pop, Latin and Afro-beat influenced original songs open ears and minds of even the savviest young listeners.

Her compelling lyrics shine a light on the spectrum of bias and the myths of stereotypes, as they celebrate the courage and compassion it takes to ref
use to be a silent bystander, to speak out and make a difference, to be kind and respectful of all unique identities in our school communities.

Interactive songs engage students with different learning styles, opening dialogues on bias and bullying with students K-12, with distinct programs tailored for elementary, middle, and high school audiences. Catchy rhythms and rhymes help students internalize key concepts captured in unforgettable phrases: Step Up to the Plate, Do the Right Thing,
Say You'll Be an Ally, Think Before You Speak, Speak Out for Me, Don’t Take the Bait. Accompanying study guides and music CDs for classroom use deepen the discussion on bias and bullying, ensuring ongoing listening and learning, long after this engaging assembly program ends.
